A Brilliant Gamble

88 Reinventing and Pivoting with Sweet Billy Pilgrim

Episode Summary

Today’s podcast guests have put music right at the centre of their lives. Jana Carpenter and Tim Elsenburg, AKA the band Sweet Billy Pilgrim, have been making music most of their lives, most recently together. They’ve usually had to combine music with “proper jobs” to make ends meet and, like many of us, have struggled to find the right balance between doing what they love and making the money to support their talent.

Episode Notes

I’m from a musical family. My dad played drums in a pipe band. My mum directed musical theatre at summer camp. Folk and jazz were the soundtrack of my early life. And I have been in many bands myself over the years. But there have been times when music hasn’t featured as large. Long hours, a young family or just forgetting what impact creativity has on my sense of well-being meant that, for many years, I didn’t perform or even listen to music that much.

Many of us have creative interests and, in an effort to find a more blended, integrated way of living we want to rediscover those passions, to express ourselves in a way that bypasses the intellectual and goes straight to the heart and soul.

In today’s interview, we talk about creativity, working in collaboration in a group, getting the blend right between keeping a roof over your head and not neglecting your calling, and reinventing and pivoting even throughout your life.
